SUMMARY:May 11th Monthly BARC Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We are happy to announce that Marcel Steiber\, AI6MS\, is returning to give another fascinating presentation for our monthly BARC meeting! Of course this time it’s on Zoom. It will be “Fully-Remote Amateur Radio Exam Administration”. \n(His previous presentation was in September 2019 on HF Towers- It was really interesting!) \nAmateur Radio license examinations are typically administered in-person by a team of at least 3 Volunteer Examiners. In 2014\, the FCC authorized remote exam administration\, which has seen limited use by a limited group of Volunteer Exam Coordinators in remote areas to provide exam sessions. In 2020\, with the nation-wide shelter-in-place health restrictions\, a renewed need to provide fully-remote exams brought together a small working group of amateur radio enthusiasts to develop processes\, documentation\, and improved examination software (using ExamTools\, from the creators of HamStudy.org). This talk will go through the details\, improvements\, and challenges of fully-remote exam administration\, including exam integrity\, digital signatures\, and computer-based testing that not only benefits the short-term need for fully-remote exams\, but also enhances in-person examination sessions for your VE Team! \nMarcel Stieber\, AI6MS\, has been an amateur radio operator since 2008 while attending the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. He was President of the Cal Poly Amateur Radio Club\, W6BHZ\, and is currently the Industry Advisor to the club. He graduated with a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering\, concentrating on RF and Communications\, and writing his thesis on “Radio Direction Finding Network Receiver Design for Low-cost Public Service Applications”. Marcel currently serves as Chair of the Cal Poly Electrical Engineering Industry Advisory Board. He is an Assistant Emergency Coordinator for the City of Cupertino\, serving as the trustee and technical lead for the Cupertino ARES UHF repeater\, W6TDM\, and as the Project Lead for the Cupertino ARES ARKnet Project\, which is building up a high-speed wireless intranet for the emergency responders in Cupertino. Marcel regularly volunteers at local repeater workdays as an RF technician and tower climber and enjoys providing communications for local bike rides and triathlons. He also volunteers as a Technical Advisor to several event management companies and local repeater groups. He is an ARRL Life Member and has helped license over 1500 hams since 2009\, mostly recently working to develop processes and train teams using fully-remote examination methods. More info at www.qrz.com/db/ai6ms The meeting will begin at 7:00pm. \nYou can go on Zoom a few minutes early to meet and greet other hams! \nAll that are interested are Welcome! To get the Zoom invitation leave a message at 707-742-3227 or info@beniciaarc.com

SUMMARY:Ralph Simpson will present: The German Enigma Machine: The Secret Battlefield of WW2
DESCRIPTION:We are excited that Ralph Simpson will be giving his fascinating presentation\, “The German Enigma Machine: The Secret Battlefield of WW2“ at our monthly meeting! It meets at the Downtown Fire Station\, 150 Military W. Please enter via the 2nd St. side door. Doors open at 6:30\, the meeting starts at 7:00.\nAll are welcome to our pre-meeting meal at Roundtable Pizza\, 878 Southampton at 5:00 pm.\nThe Enigma machine was invented over 100 years ago\, and it proved to be quite an ingenious invention! This was the first cipher device in history to use electricity to encode a message\, which was a giant leap in cipher technology. The cryptographic strength of the Enigma gave the Germans the utmost confidence in the secrecy of their messages during World War II. While this confidence was justified\, it later became their undoing because they refused to believe the evidence that the enemy was reading their messages! \nThe story of the Allies overcoming the odds and breaking the Enigma is a story of innovation\, intrigue\, and deception; which significantly shortened the war and ushered in the age of computers. The success of cracking the Enigma was kept secret for 29 years after the end of WW2\, despite tens of thousands people working on the effort in the UK and US. This secrecy is especially incredible for us living in the age of the internet\, WikiLeaks\, and Edward Snowden. Over 35\,000 Enigma machines were manufactured\, but only 350 are known to exist today. \nBiography\nRalph Simpson worked in the computer industry for 32 years\, at IBM and Cisco Systems. He is now retired and volunteers at a local museum\, History San Jose. He wrote a book on cipher history called\, Crypto Wars: 2000 Years of Cipher Evolution. He is also an avid collector of cipher machines\, which you can see on his website\, ‪CipherHistory.com‬. Ralph lives in San Jose in a restored Victorian house\, which is also home to his Cipher History Museum and a very understanding wife. They have three grown children.

DESCRIPTION:We are happy to announce\, Michelle Paquette will be giving us another exciting presentation\, “Fundamentals of Real Radio:  Real Radios Glow In The Dark” \nLow tech doesn’t mean no tech!  Older technologies give us a way to look at basic principles of our gear that modern\, computer driven and software controlled equipment obscures.  We will look ‘under the hood’ at some basic principles of electronics and touch a bit on what is involved in restoring older electronics to service. \nShe is known for her ability to explain technical subjects so that even non-technically oriented people can understand\, and she is very able to answer the most technical questions easily! This presentation is for everyone! All are welcome!
